Clemson QB Deshaun Watson is the best player in the nation, according to ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. Watson is currently ranked No. 1 overall, No. 3 in the preseason and No. 5 overall.
He is currently the No. 2 quarterback in the Big 12.
The reigning Heisman Trophy winner has thrown for more than 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns in his first two seasons, which is a record in the history of the league.
His record of 5,078 yards and 27 touchdowns is the second-best in program history.
Watson is coming off a Heisman-winning campaign in which he threw for 2,077 yards and 21 touchdowns, while also rushing for 1,958 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Last season, Watson led Clemson to its first ACC title since 2001.
In his first season with the Tigers, Watson finished second to USC’s Cody Kessler in the Heisman voting.
It’s not just Clemson QBs who are getting accolades, though.
Clemson’s defense also received some recognition, as Kiper ranked Watson as the No .1 player in conference this season.
Clemson ranks second nationally in defensive efficiency, which measures the strength of opponents’ passing attack.
Clemson has a .831 pass efficiency rating, which ranks third in the ACC behind Virginia Tech’s .829 and Alabama’s .810.
