The Kent State Athletics department said the helmets were worth $3.2 million to the school.
But it is not clear if that number includes the $3,000 they were given for the use of the helmets.
A Kent State spokesman said the department does not keep figures on the value of helmets but that they are worth about $3 million.
The university said they are not being used in practice and that they would have to be replaced.
Kent State’s helmets were worn by the football team in the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
The school was fined $2 million by the NCAA last year for using unapproved and potentially dangerous technology during a game.
